YOU ARE VISITOR NUMBER:

Dryer Sheets for Sewing?

Did you know that dryer sheets are an excellent alternative to using lightweight interfacing? Yup, stumbled upon this once many years ago when I used some to line a front pocket on a top I was constructing. I had no interfacing on hand at the time and thought to myself, "Hmmm, I wonder if these dryer sheets will work." (lol).  Back then I was so amazed how well they worked and been using them ever since.  I found that most dryer sheets are nothing but a roll of thin interfacing that has been coated with a thin layer of softening agents and fragrance anyways.
In my experiences with this stuff, the best type of dryer sheets to use are the ones that are continuous on a roll where you can tear off what you need like you do paper towel for working with long collars and plackets.
The benefits to using this is that for one it's cheap and a lot comes on a single roll.  It holds a nice fragrance to the clothing beyond several washings and keeps static cling under control.

Extra Tips
If you already use dryer sheets for softening your laundry, save the used dryer sheets and recycle them to use in future small sewing projects that call for a bit of interfacing.
To eliminate the fragrance of your dryer sheets, take off what you need, and lightly wash it using cool water and soap, rinse well and flip in the dryer for a minute or two or lay flat to dry. In fact it's best to do this for your laundry to lessen some of the toxic chemicals they use in making them.

Thanks Nisa. You probably remember when I discovered this even though it has been almost 20 years ago, lol.

Thanks for the Awesome Tip. I used dryer sheets often, once I retrieve them from the dryer, I then use them to wipe down my wood furniture.. works like a charm.

As salaamu alaikum samina, I am really not sure exactly what interfacing is (LOL). But the tip actually sounds very useful, also you are correct in the many toxic used in the making of the dryer sheets. Thanks for the tip and the reminder (smiles)

@Sheila: Glad you liked the tip and I never thought to use them for wiping down wooden furniture, that's awesome!

@zainab 1: walaikumus salaam, You may have seen interfacing inside of your clothing around necklines or beneath monogramming, etc. It's there to strengthen or stiffen the fabric and give it more form. Oh I have a good ex...it's the fabric in the headband of your niqab that makes it stronger?

I think this is a really cool tip. As far as the toxins go, I heard they started making these rubber balls to stick in your dryer to soften your clothes instead of dryer sheets. Apparently they are reusable for up to two years and reduce drying time. I don't know what brand makes them though, but they seem like a good chemical-free alternative.
